4 Ways to Use Your Hot Tub Water in An Emergency
September 5, 2014
Call it a mini reservoir. Call it a hot tub. Your backyard Hot Spring Spa is an always ready backup water supply for emergencies.
Day in and day out, your hot tub is a place for you to get away and relax, soothing your stress both inside and out.
Did you ever think that the tub is also a mini-reservoir, making sure you have an abundant water supply on hand in case of emergency? Having just been through the Napa earthquake on August 24th, I can really appreciate how hot tub water can be used in an emergency.
Some hot tub owners have learned to appreciate this backup plan when their power goes out, which in rural areas can mean the well pump stops working. Or, heaven forbid, your water supply in town is cut off for awhile as happened in Napa.
Even smaller tubs hold more than 200 gallons of water, three or four times the amount in an ordinary bathtub, and larger models can hold up to 500 gallons. That can come in handy.
Grab a bucket. Here are 4 ways you can use your hot tub water in an emergency:
1. Flushing toilets. An ordinary 400-gallon hot tub is enough for 250 toilet flushes.
2. Protecting your home from fire. You can buy a pump, hoses and other equipment you need to apply fire gel to your property with water from your hot tub at Home Fire Fighting Systems.
3. Keeping pets hydrated. If you use chlorine to sanitize your water, it will be gone in a day or two. If you use SilkBalance, Fido can drink hot tub water anytime.
4. Washing up. A dash of Chlorox in your hot tub water is enough to sanitize your dishes when no fresh water’s available. I would only recommend doing this for a short time and if you had been careful with your hot tub water care before the water shut off.
Of course, the water in your hot tub is there all the time for your relaxed soaking, and it would be great if you never face an emergency where you have to use it for anything else. But just in case, knowing that you have a plentiful water supply on hand can give you even more peace of mind.
As the Romans said it, RES EST SERVAS VOLUPTAS. Pleasure is serious business.
