There’s more to LED lighting than you thought-it won the Nobel Prize in Physics for it’s inventors. 

The LED lighting in your Hot Spring Spa isn’t just another bright idea. It’s an invention that won the 2014 Nobel Prize in Physics. Hot Spring Spas was the first to apply the technology to spas, in 1999, not long after LED became available.

Three scientists – Isamu Akasaki and Hiroshi Amano of Nagoya, Japan, and Shuji Nakamura of the University of California at Santa Barbara – created the blue light emitting diode in the early 1990s. Combined with the already-developed green and red diodes, bright white light could be generated from the energy-saving technology.

Akasaki, Amano and Nakamura’s creation of a blue light from semiconductors revolutionized lighting technology because combining the new blue diode with a red diode and a green diode creates white light.

The Nobel Committee for Physics recognized the three scientists’ work as “an invention of greatest benefit to mankind,” and cited the achievement as one that contributes to creating a long-lasting, more efficient light source. The committee went on to note: “The invention of the blue LED is just 20 years old, but it has already contributed to create white light in an entirely new manner to the benefit of us all.”
