Hot Tub Astronomers! Geminids Meteor Shower Tonight!
Hop in your steaming Hot Spring Spa and enjoy one of the best light shows of the year-the Geminids Meteor.
A new moon on Thursday-December 13th- night means inky skies and optimal viewing conditions. (Seattle: Pray for clear skies).
Meteors should start to fall as early as 9 or 10PM. But during the shower’s peak (1-3AM) you may count as many as 100 shooting stars an hour if your area has little light pollution.
Geminids, unusual among meteor showers, are the leftovers of an asteroid (most showers originate with comets). They are caused with rubble from the asteroid hits Earth’s atmosphere, lighting a path through the sky as it burns up.
No telescope or binoculars are required to see the show- just use your bare eyes.
You can’t expect to just look out the window, or simply step outside to see meteors. Your eyes take some 20 minutes to dark-adapt. If you’re serious about it, give yourself at least an hour of viewing time. Even the best meteor showers have lulls and spurts.
As a wise man once said, meteor watching is a lot like fishing. You go outside. You enjoy nature all around you and relax in your Hot Spring Spa. You hope you catch some! It doesn’t get any better than this.
