Head to your hot tub and take in the Planet Parade

March 6, 2018 – Depending on where you live, you might get the opportunity to take in a special site in the night sky over the next several days. Someone coined the phrase “Planet Parade” for the celestial event…I like it!

The Planet Parade is comprised of at least a trio of planets in the solar system all making an appearance, hovering near each other in the sky. March’s planet parade will feature Saturn, Mars and Jupiter. Our major planetary players will also be joined by the bright star Antares. They will seem to be following each other in a “parade” across the pre-dawn horizon. On March 7th, the waning gibbous moon will join in the festivities, as it pays a visit to each planet. On March 8th, the moon should be nicely tucked between Mars & Jupiter.

For the best viewing, you will want to look east (other stargazing groups say southeast) to have the best chance at witnessing the show. The hour after midnight you should be able to get a good view of Jupiter, although it appears your best chance to take in multiple planets in the procession would be in the hour leading up to dawn.

You’ll have to get up early in the morning to take in the show! And, where better than in your hot tub? You can ditch the vestiges of sleep and start the day refreshed and appreciating the universe we live in.
