The answer to a good night’s sleep is in your hot tub & sauna

November 10, 2017 – November is the month we no longer save daylight, and nighttime grows by minutes a day. It’s also National Sleep Comfort Month.  Ah, sleep! When we get enough, our minds and our bodies are all the better for it. But not all of us can slake our thirst for a good night’s sleep. The CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) estimates that up to 70 million of us are plagued by some sort of sleep or wakefulness disorder. And there’s a downside when we get shortchanged. We’re more likely to develop chronic diseases including depression, hypertension, obesity, and diabetes.

The benchmark for adults to feel refreshed and recharged is 7-8 hours of sleep a night. This amount tends to enhance our alertness and productivity.

Are you suffering from sleep deficit? If you own a hot tub or sauna, that just might help you fall asleep faster, and make it through the night in a more peaceful manner with fewer interruptions.

About 45 minutes to an hour before bedtime, hop into your hot tub or sauna. Not only will you feel relaxed, but you’ll also be priming your body for a restful night’s sleep.

Here’s what happens to your mind and your body when you include a soak in the hot tub or a sauna session to your pre-slumber routine:

  • Your body lays the groundwork for restful sleeping by producing more endorphins, resulting in a “natural high”. You become more relaxed and your mood improves.
  • When you soak or sauna it raises your body’s core temperature. What happens next is interesting. Within an hour your body starts to cool off, and this signals your brain that it’s time for slumber. You fall asleep faster, and get to a deeper (REM) sleep quicker. This sounder sleep tends to prevail throughout the night.
  • In the morning you wake up feeling better, because saunas and hot tubs flush the tension right out of your muscles and joints.

Is a hot tub soak or sauna session part of your nightly pre-slumber ritual? If not, you ought to give it a try. You’ll feel great in the midst of it and when you wake up, and you’ll sleep like a baby the rest of the night.

Wishing you a comfortable night’s sleep throughout this month and beyond!
