Extend the Life of Your Hot Tub Cover With Proper Water Care

October 31, 2017 – Easy fall maintenance tips to protect your hot tub cover

With winter approaching there are two hot tub maintenance issues that need attention, and they’re related: the condition of your cover and your water.

Two ways to keep your vinyl hot tub cover in pristine shape from top to bottom are 303 Protectant for the topside, and a good drain and refill for the underside.

  • Harsh winter weather is unkind to vinyl. A good conditioning treatment using 303 Protectant will go a long way to help your cover vinyl from drying out, fading, and cracking. Apply it to every bit of vinyl, including the top, the straps, the handles and the skirt (not the underside!). Use baking soda to clean the underside of your cover.
  • Keeping your hot tub water in crystal clean condition is not only healthy for you, but your hot tub cover as well. Water that’s out of balance can impact the underside of your cover, as well as break down the seal protecting the Styrofoam inserts.

By the way: It’s a well-known fact that hot tub covers do not last forever! Ultimately, they do take on water and lose the ability to seal your tub and maintain its energy efficiency. If your cover is beyond the three year mark, it’s likely time to consider a new one.

Closing your hot tub for the winter?

If you’re in a situation where your Hot Spring Spa will be closed for the winter, balanced water is a must. If the water chemistry is awry and your spa is closed throughout the winter, your cover could turn into a stinky mess by springtime.   If you’re closing it down, draining your spa is probably the best strategy. The process should include draining the plumbing lines as well as the spa.  If you’re not sure how to do this, feel free to email our Service Center for help. If you’re not in a DIY frame of mind, ask about Valet Service. Our team will do our best to help your protect your tub for the winter months ahead.
