Turns out, sleep is more important than we’ve noticed – a necessity for good mental and physical health, not a luxury that interrupts our productive lives.
Scientific research is finding more and more evidence that this use of one-third of our life has a great deal to do with the quality of the other two-thirds. Taking the steps to ensure that we get the sleep we need each night – such as a relaxing soak in the hot tub – should be a priority.
Sleep’s function in brain health is becoming more evident. A study at the University of Rochester Medical School, published in the journal Science last year, revealed that while we sleep, the brain is busy flushing out accumulated wastes. Evidence of this physiological activity comes on top of research that has shown the vital role of sleep in establishing memories and increasing important connections between the neurons.
Studies also show that “beauty rest” also helps prevent weight gain, and sleep deprivation causes many problems, from slowed mental reactions and depression to high blood pressure and heart disease.
A good night’s sleep starts with the easing of both physical and mental stress – which is where your hot tub comes in. Soaking in your hot tub at 102-104 degrees for 15 or 20 minutes at least two hours before bedtime can prepare your body and your mind for the rest it needs. The buoyancy and jets in the water ease your muscles and joints. The serenity of the session calms your emotions and thought processes. The cooling down when you get out of the tub signals to your body that it’s time for rest. You’ll wake up refreshed and healthier, with your brain and your body ready to face a new day.
