New Home With A Hot Tub? What to Do Before That First Soak.

New home with a hot tubHome Sweet Hot Tub

Get ready to enjoy the back yard bonus that came with your hew house.

Now that Puget Sound home sales are brisk again, many people are becoming hot tub owners because the tub came with the house. That’s a big plus – not only the health and relaxation benefits for you, but the chance to entertain friends in your new back yard.

Here’s what you need to know as a first-time hot tub owner before that first soak.

1) KNOW YOUR HOT TUB.

Get as much information as possible from the seller. Ideally you’ll get an owner’s manual, but you at least need the brand and model name or number so you can get the right supplies and maintain your tub well. In the worst case, you can at least measure the volume of the tub so you can use water care products appropriately.

2) REPLACE OR RESTORE.

If the old Hot Spring Spa doesn’t work, call Olympic Hot Tub to arrange a trade-in for a new tub. If the owner says it works but the water is stinky, green and yucky, call our Valet Service for a hot tub detail and water care lesson.

3) NEW FILTERS ARE A MUST.

Filters last for two or three years, and it’s well worth investing in new ones to avoid headaches and cloudy water.  If you didn’t get the brand or model number, remove a filter and measure it so you can purchase the right size in the store or online at Olympic Hot Tub’s estore.  Getting the exact size for your hot tub is crucial!

4) CHECK THE COVER.

If the cover is heavy, broken, cracked or peeling, get a new one. A cover gets heavy when it’s saturated with water and it won’t hold heat well, increasing your energy costs. Make sure the lifter and its arms are straight – if not, get a new one to save energy coasts and make life easier.

5) CHECK THE WATER CARE PRODUCTS.

Pack up whatever the former owner left lying around and take it to the nearest Olympic Hot Tub Store, where one of our experts will advise you. For example, water softener is a mistake in Western Washington, and the cheap chlorine made for swimming pools is a different formula and a really bad idea for hot tubs. With modern products like SilkBalance, you don’t even have to use chlorine  or manage the testing and mixing of balancing products – and you get soft, smooth skin from your soak.

6) BUY AMERICAN.

The offshore-manufactured water care products usually sold online and at big-box stores use fillers that can be harsh on your skin. American-made products pass rigorous safety standards.  A brand like SeaKlear is one you can trust and their products are made in Washington state. Also, companies formulate their products to work well together, so don’t mix brands.

7) GET EDUCATED.

An economical in-home water care tutorial from Olympic’s Valet Service can save you time and money. You’ll learn how your new hot tub works and how to care for it, so you can start enjoying the soak and relax in peace. Call 1-800 431-2876 to schedule your lesson.

Now you’re ready to soak.  Enjoy!

  1. Great tips on what to do before you get your first soak. I think the water care part is very important. Always make sure that you keep your water chemical balanced. Make sure you test the water each week and add the chemicals based on the test. If you are not sure, just take a water sample to your local pool supply store. I can’t stress this part enough. A balanced water chemistry will keep your hot tub running optimal for years to come.

    1. Hello Sophorn:
We are fortunate to be an exclusive dealer for SilkBalance which requires no testing. A hot tub owner needs to add 2 ozs weekly plus a tiny bit of shock weekly for clean, clear water. We also are fortunate to sell Hot Spring Spas with the state of the art ACE salt water system which automatically keeps the hot tub water clean & pure. You are referring to older hot tubs and those from companies such as yours which do not have up to date technology. Yes, chemicals are necessary in all outmoded hot tubs. Too bad.
