Japanese Doctors Use Infrared Sauna Sessions to Help Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Patients

Doctors at the Respiratory and Stress Care Center, Kagoshima University Hospital, Kagoshima, Japan, used infrared sauna treatments for two patients with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) with good results.  They used the following method:

Two patients with CFS underwent treatment with prednisone (the standard medication for this ailment), with no satisfactory effects. The patients were invited to try thermal therapy (infrared sauna sessions) that consisted of a far-infrared dry sauna at 60 degrees C (140 degrees F) and post-sauna warming. The infrared sauna therapy was performed once a day for 35 days. After discharge from the hospital, these subjects continued the therapy once or twice a week on an outpatient basis for 1 year.

RESULTS:

Symptoms such as fatigue, pain, sleep disturbance, and low-grade fever were dramatically improved after 15 to 25 sessions of infrared sauna thermal therapy. Although prednisone was discontinued, the subjects showed no relapse or exacerbation of symptoms during the first year after discharge. The patients were able to resume normal activities 6 months after discharge.

CONCLUSION:

These results suggest that repeated infrared sauna thermal therapy might be a promising method for the treatment of chronic fatigue syndrome.

See a related story on the infrared sauna treatments in PubMed involving additional patients.  And, the observation that repeated thermal therapy had a relaxation effect as well as reducing appetite loss and subjective complaints in mildly depressed patients. These results suggest that repeated thermal therapy may be a promising method for the treatment of chronic fatigue syndrome.

A small study? Yes, but look at the potential. And, it’s safe and reduces drug use. If you or anyone you know suffers from chronic fatigue syndrome ask your doctor about infrared sauna therapy. You might qualify for a tax deduction when your doctor prescribes infrared sauna therapy for you. It is such a debilitating disease that  I believe any possibility for help should be considered.
