SAUNA OWNER ASKS: CAN I STAIN THE SAUNA TO MATCH MY FLOOR TILE?

Here’s an email question from Carla in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada:

We have a nordic white Amberlight Finnleo sauna and we want to know if we can stain it a darker color to match the dark brown tile in the spa room? Thank you Alice

Thanks for your question, Carla. It’s a good one and one that I hear frequently.

Staining the outside of the Amberlight, which is what I believe you would like to do, is not a problem at all.  The interior needs to remain unfinished.  All sauna wood needs to be unfinished on the inside of the room for off-gasing reasons.  You wouldn’t want off gasing from the stain inside the sauna. I wouldn’t use a sealer-type of stain, but rather a re-coatable penetrating oil stain.  You’ll be able to find many colors in that type of stain and one will be the right match for your tile.

Happy relaxing!
