Swimming at home every day can do wonders for you

August 4, 2021

August 4th, 2021 – As life struggles to return to some sense of normalcy for all of us, one thing will forever remain changed: our need to make sure we have everything at home to keep us happy, healthy and…sane. Caring for ourselves and our loved ones was top of mind like never before. And, having ways to take care of everyone at home became a top priority.

Queue everyone lining up for exercise at home equipment, better mattresses for sleep, new patio furniture to take in the outdoors, and yes—hot tubs. But rising at a meteoric rate on the “I want at home” list was also the desire to swim in your own backyard.

Olympic dove (pun intended) into the swim spa business this past year, largely due to the increased demand for swimming at home, but also because it fit perfectly into our passion for wellness through water. Swim spas are the best kind of hybrid animal. They allow you the ability to swim at home every day but do it in a much more compact space. And, because the units are self-contained, you can say goodbye to the expensive construction project, permitting, and safety issues involved with an inground swimming pool.

A recent study released in the Journal of the American Medical Association noted that symptoms of depression have increased three-fold during the pandemic! One of the best ways to ward off depression is through regular exercise, and swimming at home is one optimal way to give your mind and body a healing workout. In fact, exercise is shown to be comparable to both antidepressants and psychotherapy normally used to treat those experiencing depression.

Why? First and foremost, swimming can stimulate endorphin production, as well as encourage creation of dopamine and serotonin. These all help ward off depressive thoughts and feelings. A daily swim—even for just 10-15 minutes—will help you feel more energized and put you in a much more positive headspace for the coming day.

Another key ingredient is one you cannot get through regular exercise: the feeling of weightlessness that buoyancy through water provides. If you experience aches and pains brought on partially by gravity, they will very nearly if not altogether disappear when you dip into that big body of water. If exercising is a bit of a challenge for you because of weight or previous injury, those too get pushed aside when you’re floating. What a gift!

What else can swimming daily do for you? Regular exercise through swimming can have an incredibly positive influence on your hippocampus, the part of your brain that aids in memory and also helps with emotion regulation. That helps ward off depression and improve cognition.

And—I will move away from any mirror in site as I type this!—the past year and half may have seen a few pounds added to our bodies. Swimming is a terrific aerobic exercise that will help you shed those few unwanted pounds. And your heart will thank you too!

The emergence of swim spas gives you a stellar opportunity to get all the physical and mental benefits of swimming at home every day.
