The key to boost your health? A dose of nature—and your hot tub can help

June 14, 2019

June 14, 2019 – Researchers in England recently completed a study that points to the importance of letting nature help enhance your health and well-being.

Now, don’t let that statement elicit a moan from you! This is not about exercise or physical activity—although of course those are well-documented to have terrific long-term benefits to those who do so regularly. The study pointed to the benefits for everyone simply spending a minimum of two hours a week outside in nature. Even spending time sitting on a bench outdoors provided a boost.

20,000 people were surveyed in the study, which was led by Dr. Mathew White at the University of Exeter Medical School in the United Kingdom. The sample was comprised of a mix of people from all backgrounds: young, old, wealthy and not so, as well as folks who live in urban and rural areas. At the conclusion of the study, all indicators pointed to two hours in nature being a wonderful boost to overall health and well-being. If future research findings are similar, time in nature could join the recommendations of five servings of fruit and vegetables each day and 2½ hours of exercise weekly as official health recommendations.

Interestingly enough, time in one’s garden did not necessarily contribute to the well-being response, as many view it as a space where they need to do work! But time spent in a park, beach, on a hike, in the woods, or other outdoor venues were deemed beneficial.

While the root cause of the results wasn’t the overarching goal with the study, Dr. White felt that getting out in nature induces a sense of tranquility you don’t find elsewhere in your day-to-day routine. You get to a place that’s quiet, relaxing and a spot where you can let your mind go.

Now, you can’t fault me for pointing out the obvious: your hot tub will absolutely get you that two hours you need each week to achieve your nature quotient! If you’re like me, I like to spend a minimum of 30 minutes in the hot tub each time I soak. Soaking for that amount of time outdoors every day will get you 3½ hours taking in the peace and tranquility nature will afford. As an added boost, you’ll get all the physiological and emotional benefits of hot tub soaking! (You’re welcome!)

The study results were published in Scientific Reports. Take a look (read it outside!)and make the effort to let nature boost your health.
