Here’s everything you need to know about hot tub filters.  Why the big deal about filters? Because your hot tub spa filter makes your life easier.

Your filter does the hard work while you relax in the spa. It deserves your attention – and it will pay you back with years of trouble-free service. Among other things, a clogged filter is the cause of 90% of the problems customers have with their heaters. Don’t make the mistake of one customer who recently came in to replace his 28-year-old filter for the first time. Keep your water sparkling clean all the time.

Protect. You can make your filter’s life easier – and longer – by taking a few steps to ease its workload.

• Rinse before soak. A quick shower before you slip into the tub send the daily dirt, sweat and oils down the drain so your filter doesn’t have to deal with them.
• Add a ScumBug. This oil-absorbing sponge floats in the water and grabs the oils before they reach the filter. One ScumBug works for about three months.
• Treat the water right. Add a SeaKlear Shock Pod every time you get out of the spa and run the jets for 10 minutes. Add a small amount of SeaKlear Sanitizing Granules once a week. Clean. Your filter needs a thorough cleaning every four to six weeks, depending on how often you soak and how many people share the tub.

• Turn off the power before you remove the filter for cleaning.
• Spray thoroughly with the high-pressure nozzle on your hose or, even better, our hand-held water wand.
• Use SeaKlear Spa Filter Cleaner Spray to make sure the oils, lotions, and other clogging materials are dissolved.
• Rinse thoroughly and reinstall carefully. Avoid the dishwasher even though it sounds easier.
• Consider a set of spare filters so one can be soaking with cleaner while the other is working.

Replace. Filters ordinarily last two or at most three years, although Hot Spring Spas’ exclusive TRI-X, which has twice as much filtration area as an ordinary filter and handles 10 times as many gallons per square foot, is good for five years. You’ll notice the signs when your filter needs to be retired.

• Filter is paper-bag brown, gray,  or dark yellow even after cleaning.
• The pleats become flat and lose their fibrous sheen.
• The top or bottom is cracked or split.
• The filter is shredding or coming apart.

It’s also a good idea to replace the filter if you purchase a new-to-you hot tub for someone else, just to make sure you have a fresh start. Never buy off-brands – only filters certified by your hot tub’s manufacturer.
