Good Bye Drive-In Movies. Hello Hot Tub Cinema

October 11, 2012

Hot tubbing at the cinema may be the most relaxing way to watch a good flick… in London that is.

Young moviegoers looking for something different to do on a Saturday night flock to this outdoor movie theater on a London rooftop. The fun experiment has now grown into a successful business, which currently boasts 12 hot tubs that are always occupied on viewing nights.

Hot Tub Cinema is a unique event, which combines delightfully warm hot tubs with favorite films on the big screen. They hand pick the locations, set up the tubs and the magic begins so their website proclaims. This summer the Hot Tub Cinema has taken over the rooftop of Netil360 in East London with its amazing vista of London’s  skyline. Film choices are kept secret until the credits start to roll. During sell out events, lucky Tubbers have been soaking up classic films like Top Gun and Anchorman.

Asher Charman, one of the masterminds behind the splashtastic endeavor, had this to say about the Hot Tub Cinema during a Sky News interview:

“We wanted to watch a movie, we wanted to use the hot tub, and we just thought, why don’t we project it out of the kitchen window onto a bed sheet on the washing line, and see what the results will be, and that was how it was born. About a year ago we thought, you know what, it’s about time we’ve grown our garden here, we’ve got three or four tubs, it’s time to take the step up and here we are now.”

Movie buffs are treated to a glass of champagne (hope they have good insurance-alcohol & hot water don’t mix) before stepping into either the six or eight person spa.  Watching a cool flick is just part of the fun at the rooftop cinema. After patrons watch a colorful London sunset from their prime vantage point, water relays, dancing bikini-clad women, and socializing once the credits stop rolling are all part of the exciting atmosphere at the outdoor theater. What? No Rockettes?

There’s no info on the cost of this experience.  I can guarantee it’s pricey. The last time I saw a film in London it was $25 with no hot tub, no champagne and no double bill.

So far this watery viewing experience has not made it across the pond to the United States. The success of the London cinema just might grab the attention of creative entrepreneurs inspired to open hot tub cinemas across America.
